Legal Issues

The University has a legal obligation to maintain certain records for specific periods of time. Although University record retention schedules indicate the length of time to retain records, there are some circumstances under which the retention period is superseded by a need to retain the records to support a legal action or audit. In the event that your records are required for these purposes you will be contacted by the Office of General Counsel, the Office of Audit and Compliance, or the Office of Finance and Treasury. When the legal action or audit is complete, the responsible office (OGC, OAC, or OFT) will inform you that you may resume managing the records according to the retention schedule.
